TellMe Networks has to be one of the longest-running IPO candidates ever. Now, it’s going to be part of Microsoft. I hope it doesn’t get buried inside the colossus, because the technology seems to have a lot of promise for mobile search, in addition to the real business it already has in directory assistance and customer service. I never managed to write a story about TellMe, despite the bright and articulate guy at the top (Mike McCue) and the interesting technology. Somehow, it never quite jelled as a coherent enough story line for me or my editors. Maybe that’s another way of saying it’s better part of a larger company that can use its technology in a lot of places without having to worry about concocting a neat story. Anyway, I just hope they keep that cool British phone booth in their office.
