Movie Downloads Suck--But Don't Blame Technology

I just want to amplify my colleague Rob Hof’s post on the suckiness of movie downloads. Charlie White at Gizmodo gives 10 good reasons, but it’s worth noting that with the exception of broadband connections too slow to handle HD content, all of the problems he cites could easily be solved with today’s technology—and the solutions to the broadband speed problems are being deployed. The real issue is a bunch of screwed-up business models at the Hollywood studios, consumer electronics makers, and Internet service providers. Especially the studios, who are mainly to blame for the limited titles, the nasty DRM restrictions, and the absurd pricing.
