Wanna job? How many friends do you have on Facebook?

I’ve been thinking and writing a lot about friends of late, but Ed Scanlan, founder of Total Attorneys, a legal outsourcing company in Chicago, gave me a new perspective. He’s wondering if it makes sense to hire people with big networks of friends. Why so? They can bring in more recruits and ideas.

Scanlon employs 215 people in Chicago, and another 12 in India. Average age is 27. Many of them have more than 1,000 friends on Facebook. “Now look at the collective pool of talented people,” he says. They have tens of thousands of friends (including a good number that they know and trust). And Scanlon says that hires who come through referrals tend to fit into the culture better—and to stick around. “We never had a system in place to leverage our social graph.”

So Scanlon urged his employees to Jobvite, a recruiting platform tied into social networks. And last spring he offered $2,000 finders fee for those who brought in new hires. They’ve brought in about eight so far, he says.

This leads him to this question: “If we hire someone with 220 LinkedIn contacts, is that person as valuable as someone with 5,000? At some point, employers will start to value the strength power and reach of your social network.”

In case you’re wondering, Total Attorneys, with sales of $24 million last year, has about 23 jobs open.

The strategy of recruiting people with big social network is not amazing: according to research undertaken by Edelman Trust Barometer today’s consumers are more likely to trust other people than companies, experts or universities and other institutions. While in 2003 20% of respondents placed their trust in "a person like me", Today that percentage has grown to 68%. Therefore social networking can help the business to grow as it puts individuals in touch with one another and overcomes the lack of trust that people have with companies and institutions. Successful businesses recognize more and more the power of social networking to build strong and trusting relationships with individuals and online communities.

Hiring people with big networks has been going on in the sales profession for about as long as there have been professional sales people. Think about how many help wanted ads for sales people list "big rolodex", "deep contacts", etc. in their job requirements. The tactic has already been proven successful.

The rise of social networks is simply giving employers new insight into the depth and quality of a prospective employee's network.

May cause that average age to be consistent ... overlook the experience/maturity of other workers who have just as many contact who aren't just friends, but who also are known to them as great past co-workers. Their work product is known. Can we say that for 'friends' ??

Hey Stephen! Nice post - I actually work for Total Attorneys now, and I love it. The atmosphere is great, and I've already used my social networks and the company's Jobvite system and had one friend hired here as well.
