Google Reader: What a Bunch of Geeks

Posted by: Heather Green on October 15

What do regular folks read online? It’s so hard to tell. We now know at least what the geeks read.

Mike Arrington posted a list of the most popular sites and blogs followed by folks who use Google Reader, a little data tidbit that Gabe Rivera from Techmeme pulled together.

Another bit of data is always important and nothing to sneer at. Still, it’s a total (male) geekfest. Techcrunch, Endgadget, Make Magazine, Google Operating System are all in the top 50. The only relief comes from news sites like BBC, Defamer and PopSugar. At first blush, what you can tell from this is that Google Reader seems to attract guys who looooove tech and who also loooove Google.

Ok, so maybe not that much of a shocker!

Feed aggregation tools are no good as Google, Yahoo, AOl, etc have already launched online My sort of services, where you can integrate everything rather than downloading things on your lap/desktop

however, you may interested to know that Google has played a trick here and given his reader a value in page ranking - so Chicky - perhaps - likely candidate of PR monopoly?

Great post! Finding relevant news content that is easy to access is quite difficult for the mainstream web audience. With the proliferation of social news sites, one would think we would be littered with choice. As it turns out, the male, geek audience does have enourmous choice, but the rest of the mainstream crowd (i.e. my parents) is still underserved. We've been blogging about this at NewsCred (http://blog.newscred.com) and are excited about coming up with a solution to this problem.
