Apple Touts Video

After a less than impressive kickoff on Oct. 12 for the iPod video player—in terms of the breadth of commercial videos available on iTunes—Apple is trumpeting that it sold 1 million videos in less than 20 days.

Classic moment in the press release: In the line right after touting that number Jobs says: “Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings, so that customers can enjoy watching more videos on their computers and new iPods.” It feels to me that putting that number out there is all about making the other Hollywood players who haven’t partnered with Apple feel as though they’re missing out.

Frankly, what I find missing in that press release is how many free videos were downloaded. Nice for ABC and the record labels if they’re selling videos, but I want to know how video bloggers are doing.

I consult for a company that upgraded their podcast to be a video cast after the video iPods came out--the result has been amazing. I was over at their office today while they were preparing a new episode, they have been adding servers like crazy because of it. Thanks to iTunes there are over 7,000 subscribers (since last week!) which means when you have a >100MB show it can get crazy with the bandwidth. For those without calculators, that's nearly 700GB, but they are planning on a terabyte for the next 24 hours.

But sponsorships are coming fast and furious too so it's a great business starting. It's not just the ABCs of the world making it on the iTMS.
