Coming Soon: NYTimes Reader On The Mac

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on May 13, 2008

The New York Times says it will, by the end of the month offer a Mac-friendly version of its Time Reader software that has previously been available only on Windows. From where I sit it’s about time. I generally like NYTimes.com and have just recently come to enjoy the Times File feature that allows you to save articles or reference later.

The service is based on Microsoft’s Silverlight technology, which was also used on the PC version. And technically, it will be a beta-test version when released, and won’t be completely as feature complete as the Windows version. But hey, it’s progress. Subscribers to the dead-tree edition will get to install and use it for free.

Not for free, it will come at great cost: Forced to install Siverlight technology on their computer. Siverlight is Microsoft's latest attempt to subvert Web standards and it's sad to see the Olympics and The New York Times cooperating with this effort. Most folks won't have any idea just how subversive Silverlight will be until years from now, but its purpose is to a) Fight Adobe and Apple with their Flash and Quicktime technologies; and b) eventually subvert HTML itself so that you won't be able to access the Web unless you install Micrsosoft products. Bye-bye free and open Web.

Google Silverlight and you'll see what I mean.

When I saw the headline, I was excited! I'm a frequent Times reader - even though I live upstate, they have good coverage of state government news.

Then I saw that it uses Micros**t technology.

BUMMER!

I'll take a look, but I doubt I'll use it.
