A press release from Google just hit my inbox. It’s launched a new application for the iPhone that it says integrates several Google services into a single interface: Search, Gmail, Calendar, Reader and others. Simply point your iPhone browser to google.com to use it.
From the release: “To accomplish this, Google is taking advantage of browser technologies (like AJAX) that made Gmail and Google Maps possible on the desktop. In supporting these advances in web technology, the iPhone’s Safari browser not only delivers an excellent mobile Internet experience; it enabled our product and engineering teams to create an optimal Google experience on a mobile device.”
Its a Web app meaning it lives on the Web and runs within the browser, and so its not a true iPhone app, meaning one that lives on the device. But I’m fairly certain that however Apple accredits developers to build applications next year Google will be at the top of the list.
More on this later as I get a look at the new interface.
It's nice, but they have a major problem in this ".0" release: the preferences don't let me say which of the apps I want to start out within, so every single time I want to get to the improved Gmail interface, I have to tap on "Gmail" on the top nav bar. Every time. Not good, chaps.
Nonetheless, it's a smoother, much faster interface and much appreciated by at least one heavy Google app user. :-)
