New iPhone Feature noticed in iTunes

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on June 29, 2007

Just installed iTunes and looked in the preferences tab and noticed a new feature specific to the iPhone: Looks like it will back up data from the phone, which is a feature that cell phones in general have been needing for a long, long time. I suggested just such a feature in a column late last year before the iPhone debuted at Macworld in January. Once again, Apple shows the rest of the world how things should done. Every time I’ve switched wireless phones, I’ve had to re-enter contacts and pictures and speed-dial numbers and so on. IPhone users will have a backup image stored on their computers. The Treo has had that backup feature for years. I've been through 3 or 4 and each time it just takes one sync and I've got all my info back. I've even had my contacts beamed from the old one to the new one before I even left the store.

Nokia phones - the N-Series and 6 Series Phones I've owned at least - have had the ability to back-up data to a PC for the longest time. Of course, Apple's implementation is probably more elegant and less frustrating than Nokia's, going by the IPod - ITunes experience.

Yes it's a great function, but this is something that's been available for cell phone users in Korea for a very long time. Not only can you back up your contact lists, but your ringtones, music, pictures, calendars, and the list goes on.

I applaud Apple for creating a truly beautiful product that allows for surfing the web. However, besides the design and the fact that it can surf the web, I don't think it's too groundbreaking. Over here in Korea, as well as Japan, you'd be pretty amazed at some of the things you can do with your phones.

Yes, the hardware manufactures play a big role, but just as important, the carriers play a major role in allowing for the constant innovation and wonderful services we have available in the Far East.
