Why Business Ethics Matter

Ethics in business remains one of the hottest topics in corporate boardrooms and B-schools today. This is certainly not a new issue for owners and managers of organizations, or for employees. In a recent online survey we asked a random sample of 200 employees and supervisors across the country to tell us about their companies. While 48% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, "Senior management at my company models corporate values of ethics and integrity," 29% said they disagreed, 12% strongly disagreed, and 24% didn’t know.

Do your employees know what the purpose and values of your organization are? Do you and your organization’s managers model these precepts? Are they effectively and consistently communicated and demonstrated? Has that changed over the course of time and if it has, how have you "adjusted" your ethics to manage in this new environment? In examining your own situation you need to recognize the potential outcomes and consequences of that shift in terms of corporate culture, leadership, and the bottom line.
