The problem with MSM podcasting: Idiotic questions

Stephen Baker

One thing that's great about being a print reporter: You can ask idiotic questions and--with the notable exception of the source--no one else has to hear them. Dumb questions are useful for several reasons. Sometimes they make the source feel comfortable. Sometimes they help nail down things that you weren't quite sure of, but that prouder reporters would be to embarrassed to ask.

Nothing wrong with dumb questions--until you podcast your interview and the whole world gets to hear them. I got a dose of this yesterday while listening to people at the Philadelphia Inquirer interview Phillies General Manager Pat Gillick. They asked him, for example, if the all-star second baseman he'd just signed to seven-year $85 million contract was an important component of the team. Oh yeah, real important.
