Does Wikipedia need editors?

Interesting traffic around Nicholas Carr's skeptical posts about Web 2.0 and Wikipedia. It reminds me of a frightening article from Advertising Age called The Chaos Scenario. The common point: New models can tear down the old on the basis of cost and efficiency. But quality is not guaranteed. Nor is a profitable business model.

I suppose that's one interpretation. Or you could say that both the traditional way and the new way end up co-existing because you need to triangulate. Or you could say maybe it's not inevitable that Wikipedia will have legs. There are technologies that people love at first, but then abandon or become beloved by small niche of people, like Ham radio.
