what a complete load of utter rubbish. africa has innumerable structural, social and economic difficulties and these pathetic feel good attempts by popstars can be of no real benefit to the country. even worse is the utterly hypocritical natures of the film 'stars' so kindly volunteering their services to advertise how important it is when they get more per movie than the citizens of a small african city earn in a year.

the most telling quote is probably: "Ayres says tech companies are still studying Ethiopia before committing resources." so infact all these companies have done is put their name behind a cause that gives them good publicity but costs them nothing...wahey CSR

A lot of the companies have already dedicated resources to the registration drive and the billion Web ads. People such as John Gage at Sun are already rich, and are very excited about the Ethiopia project. I can't imagine that they would lend themselves to the type of cynical pr project you suspect. If you want to look at it with a jaundiced eye, consider this question: 1) Are companies cyling old inventory into Africa and using it for tax write-offs? My response? Could be, but it wouldn't be a bad use for it.
