Yammering on planes

Stephen Baker

It's just a matter of time before we're overhearing loads of phone conversations on planes. Jason Calacanis hooked up Skype from the air, and dug it. Wonder if the folks in the next row were quite as thrilled. For an idea of what's around the corner, check out Skype's blog.

You guys... you have *no* faith in the power of technology. Somebody will come to our rescue with some even newer form of technology. How about a low-frequency "hummer" that is relatively inaudible, but causes the microphone of nearby cell-phones in vibrate in such a way that they are essentially useless as communication devices. Call it "Cell-Phone-Be-Gone". Unfortunately, for every counter-measure, there is always a counter-counter-measure, and so on ad infinitum. It's an "arms race".

I don't look forward to all those yakking a-holes on planes, but somehow we all figure out "modes" for coping.

Our attitude should always be to let technology continue to march forward and to fix emergent problems with the wisdom that comes only from hindsight.
