Table: A Mountain of Woes

ECONOMIC

Per-capita GDP, now an estimated $700, has declined more than 70% since 1980. Inflation is estimated at 60%, while unemployment approaches 50%.

FINANCIAL

Iraq's foreign debt is $61.3 billion. Baghdad faces war-damage claims of $297 billion, mainly from Kuwait and Iran.

SOCIAL

Over 40% of Iraq's 24 million population is under the age of 14: The workforce cannot absorb so many young people. Some 20% of children under age 5 are estimated to be underweight.

POLITICAL

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are beneficiaries of Saddam's patronage: They could be a potent force of resentment. The fractured exile community is already objecting to U.S. plans.
