Solitude--and a Few Interesting Neighbors

Mark H. McCormack has seven addresses in five time zones--from a house in Maui to a flat in London. But when the founder and CEO of sports marketing heavyweight IMG is seeking solitude and a golf-course view, he heads for his retreat at Orlando's fashionable and heavily gated Isleworth community.

McCormack and his wife, former tennis champion Betsy Nagelsen, set up residence at Isleworth in 1989, not far from a number of high-profile athletes, including some IMG represents. Arnold Palmer, McCormack's first sports client, was one of Isleworth's original developers. Tiger Woods, another star in the IMG stable, lives in the neighborhood, as do basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal, baseball All-Star Ken Griffey Jr., and a half-dozen PGA Tour golfers.

PREMIUM ON PRIVACY. Not that there are any really close neighbors. "I like to be secluded at times," says McCormack, 71, who lives at Isleworth about 120 days a year. "To have people there when I want. And to be alone when I want that." His sprawling six-acre compound is "extremely private." There's a swimming pool and tennis court. And the nine-bedroom house backs up to the second green at Isleworth's championship golf course.

McCormack, who competed in three U.S. Amateurs, isn't the avid golfer he once was. But he still plays about 15 rounds a year, not counting the times he wanders into the backyard with a few clubs slung over his shoulder. "In the evening, I'll just jump in a golf cart and play four or five holes, usually alone." And when he's looking for a partner, he can always check if Tiger's free. By Mark Hyman
