GTE HITS THE INFO ON-RAMP
Get out your Information Superhighway scorecard, and pencil in one more late player. On May 24, GTE announced a relatively modest $250 million proposal to offer video services to 500,000 homes by the end of 1995. GTE has been slow to enter the race to combine phone, video, and computerized services, in part because its executives remain skeptical about the demand. But its prototype of interactive cable in Cerritos, Calif., now concluded, was among the earliest tests of the technology. Now, GTE will deliver video to four markets where it provides local telephone service and says it plans to extend service over the next decade to some seven million homes.
