A FREE-SPEECH WIN FOR BUSINESS

Business scored an unexpected victory on Mar. 24, when the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment protects advertising for so-called commercial speech. The 6-to-3 decision upheld lower court decisions striking down a Cincinnati ordinance that banned advertisers from distributing handbills in metal newsracks on the city's sidewalks. Earlier high court rulings indicated it didn't necessarily think commercial speech deserved the same constitutional protections as other speech.
