U.S. Air Force Says Northrop Drone ‘Not As Capable’ as U-2

February 01, 2012

Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- One of the versions of Northrop Grumman Corp.’s Global Hawk surveillance drone is not as capable as Lockheed Martin Corp.’s manned U-2 spy plane, Air Force Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz said in a Pentagon press briefing today.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta yesterday proposed canceling purchases of 10 so-called Block 30 Global Hawk models and said the Pentagon would continue buying the more advanced Block-40 model.

Schwartz declined to specify how many Block-40 planes the Pentagon would buy in the next five years.
