After Sandy, NY officials address power complaints


ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Westchester County and the Cuomo administration are pushing a utility to speed power restoration efforts after Superstorm Sandy.

County Executive Robert Astorino confirms to The Associated Press that he and state officials met with New York State Electric & Gas Corp.'s president on Wednesday after complaints from residents. Officials said crews weren't working to restore power the way other utilities were.

Astorino says NYSEG also wasn't communicating adequately with public works crews who waited to hear if downed lines were safe.

A NYSEG official says the utility first had to check its main transmission line. NYSEG is sending more crews to Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties.

A county monitor has been assigned and the governor office may send another.

NYSEG had about 114,000 customers without power at the peak, out of 2.2 million statewide. The NYSEG number was down to about 80,000 by midday Thursday.
