Toyota Denies Report it Threatened Leaving Turkey Over Lawsuits

July 30, 2012

Toyota Motor Co. (7203)’s Turkish unit denied reports in the Turkish media that it’s threatening to stop investments in the country after a spate of worker lawsuits.

The media reports are without basis and Toyota remains committed to building on its 1.2 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in investments in Turkey, according to an e-mailed statement from Toyota Otomotiv Sanayi Turkiye AS.

Toyota did not send a delegation from Japan to Ankara and did not threaten to end investments in Turkey, the statement said.

Istanbul-based Star newspaper reported today that Toyota sent a delegation to Ankara and threatened to stop investing in Turkey after about 15 workers filed cases against it.

Toyota has had four cases related to workplace safety opened against it in about 18 years of operation in Turkey, the statement said. All of the cases were judged by courts to be without merit, it said.
