Ryder Hesjedal today became the first Canadian to win one of the three major tours of the cycling season with victory in the Giro d’Italia.
Hesjedal clinched the title after today’s time trial helped him overtake leader Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain, who finished second overall. Hesjedal clocked 34 minutes, 15 seconds for the 17.5-mile stage, for a winning margin of 16 seconds.
Today’s 21st and final stage in Milan was won by Marco Pinotti of Italy. The other “grand tours” are those of France and Spain.
