Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Burhan Ghalioun, president of the Syrian National Council, said the Russians were told that their economic and military interests in Syria would be preserved even without President Bashar al-Assad in power.
“We reassured them that we are keen to continue the historic relationship with Russia,” he told reporters in New York. Even “if the Russians let us go, we will not let go of them.”
His comments, made in Arabic during a news conference, were translated in English by a spokesman after the news conference. Ghalioun met regime until Assad steps down.
Ghalioun met this morning with Russia’s ambassador at the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin.
