Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that fiscal discipline among Europe’s nations is the key to the European Union’s future success.
Keeping to rules such as the Growth and Stability Pact is the key to Europe’s future success in global competition, Merkel said in a speech in Berlin today. “That is why I will keep fighting for this adherence to the rules,” she said.
“Only together” will the EU overcome the challenges of the sovereign debt crisis, and political union is the “great task” of the years ahead, she said. Even so, the crisis won’t end “from one day to the next,” she said.
