Chilean Stocks: Banco Santander, Cencosud, Empresas La Polar

Jan. 16 (Bloomberg) -- The following companies had unusual price changes in Chilean trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses and prices are as of the close in Santiago.

The Ipsa index rose 0.4 percent to 4,220.57. The MSCI Chile index climbed 1.3 percent to 2,374.65.

Banco Santander Chile (BSAN CC) jumped 5.1 percent, the most in a month, to 40.17 pesos. Santander led gains by Chilean banks as global stocks rallied after French borrowing costs fell in the first sale of bills since Standard & Poor’s downgraded the country. Banco de Chile (CHILE CC) rose 1.8 percent to 72.5 pesos, Corpbanca (CORPBANC CC) advanced 1 percent to 6.99 pesos.

SACI Falabella (FALAB CC) gained 0.4 percent to 4,112.2 pesos. Shares of Chile’s biggest retailer by market value may reach 5,400 pesos in a year, Banco de Credit & Inversiones analysts including Veronica Perez wrote in an e-mailed note to clients, reiterating an “overweight” recommendation.

Cia. Sud Americana de Vapores SA (VAPORES CC), Latin America’s largest container shipping company, fell for a fifth day, losing 0.2 percent to 102.8 pesos. The Baltic Dry Index, a measure of commodity shipping costs, fell 3.8 percent to 1,013 points, according to the Baltic Exchange in London.

Empresas La Polar SA (LAPOLAR CC) fell 6.9 percent to 240.33 pesos. The department-store operator seeking to avert a second bankruptcy in 12 years has slumped 16 percent in the three days after a court prevented it from restructuring client debt. Bondholders will convene in Santiago this week to discuss the ramifications for the company’s revised debt repayment terms, Diario Financiero reported on its website today.
