Independent ECB Must Act as it Sees Fit, Germany’s Roesler Says

December 01, 2011

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Germany upholds the independent policy decisions of the European Central Bank in the debt crisis as the “principal good” of the central bank’s actions, German Economy Minister Philipp Roesler said today.

Citing talks today with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Roesler told reporters in Berlin that the ECB’s independence means its “will make decisions that it views as right” and Germany backs this stance.

Merkel will back this positions at a Dec. 8 - 9 summit of European leaders, as well her government’s opposition to the introduction of joint euro-region bonds, Roesler said.
