Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Russia has produced 3.5 million metric tons of sugar from beets to date, which is an “absolute record” in the country’s production history, the Sugar Producers’ Union said on its website.
The largest sugar-producing areas were the Central federal district with 1.9 million tons, the Southern region with 981,000 tons and Volga with 499,000 tons, the union said today.
Russian sugar plants are expected to continue refining sugar beets until the end of February 2012 and may produce about 5.2 million tons of sugar, which would meet domestic needs, it said.
