Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) -- The Philippines may import between 500,000 tons and 850,000 tons of rice next year, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said in Manila today.
Alcala said the National Food Authority Council will meet later this month to complete next year’s rice import plan. The forecast is a “personal” estimate, he said.
The Southeast Asian nation lowered imports to 860,000 tons this year from 2.5 million tons in 2010. Storms that damaged crops prompted the review of a plan to cut purchases further to 500,000 tons in 2012.
