Russian Dry-Cargo Vessel Missing in White Sea, Ministry Says

November 15, 2011

Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Russian authorities lost contact with a dry-bulk vessel carrying 11 crew members in the White Sea, the Emergency Ministry said.

The Kapitan Kuznetsov was en route to Arkhangelsk from the port of Varandei in the Barents Sea for repairs when radio communication broke off at 2 a.m. local time, the ministry’s Arkhangelsk regional office said on its website today.

Stormy weather and waves as high as 4 meters in the area where the dry cargo went missing are hampering the rescue operation, Igor Grigoryev, a spokesman for the ministry’s Arkhangelsk branch, said in comments broadcast on state television. He didn’t specify if the ship carried any cargo.

The authorities may dispatch aviation and a tug boat to help locate the vessel, the ministry said in the statement.
