‘Puss in Boots’ Is No. 1 Film With $34.1 Million in Receipts

Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- “Puss in Boots,” DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.’s spinoff from its “Shrek” movies, was the top film at U.S. and Canadian theaters, taking in $34.1 million in ticket sales.

The horror movie “Paranormal Activity 3,” from Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, dropped to second place with $18.1 million in sales in its second weekend, researcher Hollywood.com Box-Office said today in an e-mailed statement.

“Puss in Boots,” one of two films DreamWorks Animation released this year, trailed the $42 million opening-weekend estimate of Boxoffice.com. The stock fell 7.8 percent, the most since August, to $18.55 at the close in New York. A snowstorm in the U.S. Northeast may have affected the weekend’s receipts.

“It was a major storm; I’m sure that impacted the box office,” Paul T. Sweeney, media analyst at Bloomberg Industries, said yesterday in a telephone interview. “What we’ve seen with DreamWorks’ titles is they tend to have a pretty long life in the theater. I would expect ‘Puss in Boots’ to play well in the theaters for certainly several weeks.”

The storm dropped the most snowfall on the Northeast this month since 1979, according to AccuWeather.com Inc., with as much as 31 inches in some towns.

“Puss in Boots” is based on the sword-wielding cat voiced by Antonio Banderas in three “Shrek” movies. It follows the character as new friends battle to save his village from destruction. The cast includes Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton.

DreamWorks Animation films are distributed by Paramount under an agreement scheduled to expire at the end of next year. The company is considering options including forming its own distribution unit, three people with knowledge of the situation said in September.

“It’s just a more competitive marketplace for animation,” Sweeney said. “So, the titles still continue to perform well, but they are clearly not as strong as perhaps some of the earlier franchises they had.”

“Paranormal Activity 3” is a prequel to the first two films, explaining the origins of the supernatural terror that haunts two sisters and their families.

Home-Video Cameras

Like the other movies, the third installment is presented as footage from home-video cameras set up by the family to capture the source of strange occurrences. The movie features Sprague Grayden and Katie Featherston.

The science-fiction thriller “In Time” opened in third place with sales of $12.1 million. The Twentieth Century Fox movie, featuring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, is set in a world where time can be bought and sold to extend or shorten life. Timberlake’s character goes on the run after being falsely accused of stealing a century’s worth of time.

“Footloose,” a remake of the 1984 hit, fell to fourth from third with $5.5 million. The Paramount picture tells the story of a big-city teenager, played by Kenny Wormald, who’s exceptionally skilled at dancing. He moves to a small town where the local preacher discourages dancing.

The original film, featuring Kevin Bacon as the disruptive newcomer, cost $8.2 million to make and generated $80 million in domestic ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo.

‘The Rum Diary’

The weekend’s other new release, FilmDistrict’s “The Rum Diary,” based on the semiautobiographical novel by Hunter S. Thompson, was fifth with $5.1 million. Johnny Depp stars as a journalist working in Puerto Rico who must decide whether to reveal or become a part of a corrupt development scheme.

Weekend revenue for the top 12 films rose 8.1 percent to $93.6 million from a year earlier, Hollywood.com said. Domestic box-office receipts this year have declined 3.9 percent to $8.52 billion. Attendance is down 5.9 percent.

The amounts below are based on actual ticket sales for Oct. 28 through yesterday.
