Canada’s NDP President Topp Says He’ll Run to Succeed Layton

September 12, 2011

Sept. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Brian Topp, the president of Canada’s New Democratic Party, said today he will run to succeed the late Jack Layton as leader of the country’s biggest opposition party.

Topp made the comments at a press conference in Ottawa. Layton died last month after a battle with cancer. In the May 2 general election, Layton led the NDP to capture 103 of the 308 seats in the nation’s House of Commons, the largest seal total in the party’s history.
