The Case for Optimism

The BusinessWeek/YouGov Optimism Index

The Optimism Index, developed using data from pollster YouGov and Washington-based research firm RT Strategies, measures U.S. public opinion on a weekly basis, along with daily economic and market forecast statistics, to evaluate shifts in outlook. We created this benchmark index to gauge the level of optimism of individuals, professional investors, and economists in three categories: jobs, the stock market, and economic growth. Since its roll-out in March, the Optimism Index has doubled in value and is currently just a bit below its Aug. 4 high of 50.52.
