Greece

Greece's largest mobile-phone company makes its first appearance on the IT100 list this year as it continues a push into Eastern Europe. After acquiring mobile operators in Romania, Bulgaria, and Macedonia last year, Chief Executive Evangelos Martigopoulos recently signed a $1.6 billion deal to take over Germanos, a Greek mobile-phone retailer with an extensive network of Eastern European stores that should boost Cosmote's profile even more. Revenues rose 13% in 2005, to $2.3 billion, with profits up 10%, to $436.5 million.

Evangelos Martigopoulos

Managing Director

Evangelos Martigopoulos has been managing director of Cosmote Mobile Telecommunications, a subsidiary of Hellenic Telecommunications Organization since June, 2000. Since July, 2002, he has been in charge of Hellenic Telecommunications Organization's mobile business unit. Between March, 1998, and February, 2000, Martigopoulos was sales and marketing director of Cosmote. In February, 2000, he assumed the functions of general commercial manager of Cosmote. Since August, 2000, Martigopoulos has been chairman of the board of AMC. He serves as a director of Cosmote Mobile. Martigopoulos holds a master's degree in power electronics from Brunel University in Britain and a bachelor's degree from the University of London.
