Novatek Microelectronics

(TSEC: 3034)

Taiwan

Last year was a good one for this fabless chip designer, with sales up 48%, to $809 million, and profits soaring 57%, to $175 million. But with major producers of TFT-LCD panels reporting disappointing sales, Novatek is now in a bind. The Hsinchu (Taiwan)-based company is the world's leading designer of driver chips for LCD panels and so is vulnerable now that the industry is at the low end of the business cycle. On June 7, Novatek announced that May sales fell sharply, down 15%, as customers didn't see the surge in demand for LCD TVs ahead of the World Cup that they had expected.
