Anixter International
This wholesaler of communications cables and electrical gear is a global powerhouse. Based in Glenview, Ill., Anixter distributes 275,000 products from 169 warehouses in 45 countries. Such an extensive warehouse network enables Anixter to deliver 99% of orders within 24 to 48 hours around the globe. That reliability gives customers the confidence to buy from one supplier. The result: $3.27 billion in sales in 2004, giving it a commanding 20% of this fragmented market.
And Anixter is only getting bigger. Recent acquisitions have added fasteners to the product mix, leading to breakthroughs in distribution to blue-chip manufacturers. Its new biz helped Anixter up first quarter revenues nearly 15% over a year ago, to $876.5 million. The company plans to cross-sell these new offerings to existing customers, making 2005 a promising year
