1997

Blockbuster drugs, blockbuster deals. Those were a couple of the big ideas driving the performance of the 1997 BW 50. This list was dominated by health-care companies like Merck & Co., financial giants such as Travelers Group , and hot-shot chipmaker Intel Corp., which finished at No. 1. And a running-shoe company named Nike Corp. was burning up the track with one of the best stock-market returns.
