Major Objectives
Hunger Relief
As one of North America's leading food retailers, we are proud to be at the forefront of efforts to reduce hunger. During 2004 our U.S. retail operations donated more than $100 million worth of merchandise to local food banks and hunger relief programs. Safeway is one of the largest supporters of America's Second Harvest, the nation's largest network of food banks.
Education
We have long recognized the critically important role education plays in building strong communities and ensuring their future growth. Last year we contributed more than $20 million to local schools through eScrip and other fundraising programs.
Health and Human Services
We support vital health and human services such as women's shelters, health screening and child care, to name just a few. We hold annual fundraisers for prostate cancer awareness, breast cancer awareness and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Special Needs
We donate funds to agencies that help people with disabilities and other special needs. Through in-store donation programs, our customers and employees have donated many millions of dollars for victims of natural disasters and other tragedies. In early 2005, for example, we raised more than $3.8 million for tsunami relief efforts in South Asia and Eastern Africa.
