To gather our inaugural list of global D-schools, we created an advisory board composed of 24 experts—among them, designers, design educators, innovation consultants, and recruiters (names listed below). We relied on them to recommend programs from which they hire and where they refer students. Many spoke with dozens of their colleagues to gather suggestions. We then conducted 200-plus interviews to narrow our picks to the best 60 global programs that combine design, business, engineering, and social sciences.
BusinessWeek's D-schools are not the halls of classical training. Cranbrook Academy of Art, for instance, which places third in Design Intelligence's annual ranking of the country's best industrial design programs, doesn't make the list. Nor do several other terrific traditional arts programs. That's because we focused on design that stretches across disciplines. We wanted programs that teach design thinking and strategy. We looked at design that goes beyond great products and services to design that shapes new business models and spurs innovation. The schools on our list range from the tried and true to the super new programs that have not yet had time to prove themselves. Some experiments may inevitably fail; many will birth a new generation of ideas to carry forward. We look forward to your feedback.
