Insert Joke About Layers Of The Onion

Posted by: Jon Fine on July 20, 2006

It’s not entirely reassuring when a site bases a report around what it terms an “unconfirmed rumor.”

After a few phone calls and emails this week, though, I didn’t get much closer than anyone to finding out whether or not Viacom is in talks to buy The Onion. So I can’t tell you whether this is the story (scroll down) or this is the story.

What I can tell you is that it’s going to be very hard for anyone to top the headline of the internal Onion memo denying the talks: Factual Error Found On Internet.

The Onion has been manuevering to sell itself since 1999. And Viacom via Comedy Central has always been the main suitor.

Onion staff is very secretive and will dish out white lies and red herrings but anyone from the Onion telling you such a buyout would not be welcome has not done their own due diligence. and believe you me buddy, the Onion has done tons of due diligence in the past 6 years.
