Gilead Sciences
John C. Martinis has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Gilead Sciences Inc. since April 1996. Dr. Martin joined Gilead Sciences Inc. in October 1990 as Vice President for Research and Development and was appointed Chief Operating Officer in October 1995 before becoming its Chief Executive Officer. From 1984 to 1990 he was employed at Bristol-Myers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company, where he was Director of Antiviral Chemistry. Dr. Martin was employed at Syntex Corporation, a pharmaceutical company, from 1978 to 1984. Dr. Martin is the co-inventor of ganciclovir, a pharmaceutical developed by Syntex and now marketed by Roche for the treatment of cytomegalovirus infection. He was the President of the International Society for Antiviral Research from 1998 through 2000, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Bioscience Center from 1999 through 2001 and served on the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases Council from 2000 through 2003. He currently serves on the Centers for Disease Control/Health Resources and Services Administrations Advisory Committee on HIV and STD Prevention and Treatment. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the California Healthcare Institute and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, and the Board of Trustees at the University of Chicago and Golden Gate University. Dr. Martin received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Chicago, an MBA in Marketing from Golden Gate University and his BS in chemical engineering from Purdue University. He received the Isbell Award of the American Chemical Society for his applications of carbohydrate chemistry to the design of medicinally active nucleosides and nucleotides. He also is the recipient of the International Society for Antiviral Research's Gertrude B. Elion award for Scientific Excellence.
