The press conference at the National Press Club, ostensibly called by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, was seemingly packed with reporters—and the message was stunning. Purporting to speak for Chamber President Thomas J. Donohue was a guy introduced as “Hingo Sembra.” In the wake of high profile defections of companies from the Chamber over the Chamber’s opposition to climate change legislation, “Sembra” said, the Chamber had decided to do an about-face and back the bill. “Without a stable climate, there will be no business,” he explained. “The Chamber believes that if we do not help to prepare a strong climate bill for the President, we will face a new foreclosure crisis, due once again to the shortsightedness of a few.”
“Sembra” went on to hold a Q&A session, elaborating on the Chamber’s purported new position. But suddenly, Eric Wohlschlegel, the Chamber’s real press person, burst in through the back door of the Press Club’s Zenger Room. “This press conference is a hoax,” he said. “I don’t know who these people are, but they don’t represent the Chamber!”
Wohlschlegel said he had heard about the event just a few minutes before, when a reporter mistakenly turned up at the U.S. Chamber itself looking for the press conference. Press conference? What press conference? Hearing what it supposedly was about, Wohlschlegel rushed over to the Press Club to confront the imposters. A number of the ‘reporters’ in the room were not real reporters either.
It was too late for at least one media outlet. Reuters had already run a story on its webpage with the news of the Chamber’s reversal—and the story had been also picked up by the New York Times web page. Reuters and the New York Times ran a hasty correction. CNBC also was taken in.
Who was responsible for the hoax? My first thought was Greenpeace. After all, it was a well-organized, not inexpensive stunt. The hoaxers rented the room at the Press Club, created their own Chamber of Commerce stationary and website, and even had a phone number which led to voice mail saying “you have reached the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.”
But while a Greenpeace staffer was impressed by the stunt, he said that his organization was not involved. Instead, the imposters came from a prankster group called the Yes Men. In the past, they’ve been successful at impersonating everyone from a Dow Chemical spokesman (and appearing as such on BBC news) to ExxonMobil representatives.
In the time of the 1100's AD the temperature was significantly higher in Europe as in prior years, according to historical data, some of which was seen in the documentary entitled- THE OBAMA DECEPTION. (you can 'Google' it & watch it!). And in that same area of Europe in 1600's, the temperature cooled significantly. There were no factories, cars, SUV's, airplanes, power-boats, etc., back in the 1100's & the 1600's, correct? The climate changes were due mainly to SOLAR activity & shifts in the JET STREAM which take place at various times throughout history. Even other planets in our solar system are experiencing higher temperatures than before! There was a NOVA special on the PBS station not too long ago confirming the shifts in the jet stream which happen about every 70 years. I believe that this entire 'climate issue' is being overblown so that new TAXES could be put into place & levied on products & services so governments can sustain themselves in these 'lean' times when tax revenue isn't what it used to be. It makes sense, right? Governments would collapse if they didn't generate the much needed tax revenue, right? Maybe ALL governments should shrink by 65% or more, huh? That would certainly eliminate a lot of hot air, right?!
The imposters should be prosecuted. The world is awash in misinformation and they just added to it.
I trust if it had been your organization that was falsely represented, you'd not be happy -- even more so if that fraud misrepresented your position on an important issue.
Why not just focus on facts?
Don't news organizations check the veracity of the stories before they print?
That's ridiculous. If this was all about raising taxes, than how long do you think the gov't would get away with collecting all those taxes, only to use them for something else??? I mean, your statement is that the gov't is creating a hoax so they can collect taxes, but not really spend the money on anything related to climate change. It's really dumb. So, when you ask "It makes sense, right?" it says a lot about you.
You're just like others from BOTH sides - they make up their mind ahead of time based on internals, then they run after copy that supports what they already believe. The scaremongers pretend to be scientists, or to hide behind scientists, so you'll think their opinion is based on knowledge. But, they don't know what their talking about. They just like to call opponents stupid for disagreeing. Then there are people like you who barely made it through High School, but know how to Google this and Google that until they can fill their bucket with enough crap to start slinging solar cycles and sunspots and nutty gov't conspiracies. It's amazing how anyone can think the gov't is even capable of coverups. They can't get a thing done in DC, Congressmen can't keep a secret to save their life, but somehow an entire bureau is able to organize perfectly and maintain secrecy and control what everyone thinks. Idiotic.
@Karl: No, it doesn't make sense. What makes more sense is that people like you are destroying the world through your wasteful lifestyle and refusal to face the truth. BTW, global warming was a (pardon the pun) "hot" topic even before Obama was a junior senator from Illinois.
Also, if the only reason why governments were interested in global warming was taxes then you would be OK supporting climate change legislation if it led to a tax reduction, right? For example, let's say the law were changed to say that if you drive an SUV instead of a Prius you go to jail - since SUVs are more expensive than Priuses the govt gets less taxes in terms of sales tax and fuel tax - so you are ok with this idea right? I thought not.
Your problem is not that you don't like government (let's see how eagerly you await your social security check once you grow older) but that you are so blinded by partisan politics that you don't want to see a train wreck headed your way just because the opposing party was the first to understand it's coming. You need to stop watching Faux News (a more legitimate spelling for the channel) and learn to apply some critical thinking skills to the problems of the country and the world.
No Karl, your comments do *NOT* make sense. They make NO sense if a person believes in science and statistics.
The anti-climate change lobby uses FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) and is (a majority of the time) motivated by personal biases or financial interests, rather than letting science do the talking.
Now of course, you can trot out people with a "science background" or even degree titles, but the over riding truth is that you do not ignore a 95% agreement in your realm of business or culture or beliefs... but here you want the world to risk the planet due to a (less than) 5% expert opinion.
That's a terrible investment, an example of LACK of education, and simply not worth the risk.
Karl, as you haven't been able to recognize the reality that a "documentary" called the "Obama Deception" is just as biased as any Michael Moore piece, I don't expect you to be able to sort through the scientific realities.
- Climate at individual regions of the world at any point in time are meaningless. What matters are global averages. In the 1100's and 1600's, global temperatures were cooler than now. This is supported by scientific evidence (ice cores, sediment samples, biological samples) taken from around the world.
- There are some basic realities of physics that can not be written off as political conspiracy. CO2 traps heat. It is also confirmed FACT that there is many times more CO2 in the atmosphere than there has been for thousands of years.
- The actual consequences of global warming will, unavoidably, remain hypothetical until they happen.
-The legitimate to have right now is whether we are willing to live with the various predictions of those consequences should they come true.
You are correct about one thing though. All governments probably should shrink by 65%. Even if global warming does need to be addressed, I trust the government to screw it up.
The retraction is what position of the Chamber of Commerce should be. When the next Katrina hits, our economy won't be able to deal, even as warming deniers continue to cherry pick data. Right now they're desperately looking for new reasons for the warming, such as the solar cycle, which isn't even well understood, unlike the properties of Carbon Dioxide and how it affects the earth's energy budget. This is taught in any weather 101 class: more CO2 means net warming. Yes there is feedback (negative or positive) and other cycles, which likewise can lead to cooling or additional warming. For as much as we know, the other factors that the deniers love to talk about might be covering up some of the warming due to increasing CO2 from fossil fuels. That would mean an acceleration of warming once the cycle to be named later plays out.
In the historical record, CO2 content was higher due to volcanism. Be careful what you wish for.
There's just no denying that increasing C02 increases *average* global temperatures, which includes warmer nights overall, melting snowpack and glaciers, thus the fear for communities relying on alpine water supplies.
While deniers are plenty (but dwindling), listen carefully to what they say at the water cooler. One cold day or even winter does not undermine an average, any more than one ground out disqualifies a batting average of 300 with more than a thousand appearances at the plate.
We need more events like this as a counter balance to the misinformation put out (now blogged) by deniers. We need a long-term perspective for what's best for the majority of people and the planet. Maybe the chamber would eventually realize that sensible policy is actually good for business.
Please learn to spell "stationery."
Karl - well spoken!
The natural circles - whichever you want to choose - have a bigger effect than humans.
Take the change in the spinning and rotation of our earth which changes angle and distance from our sun. Then the evidence that CO2 follows the temperature with about 5000years delay (Science 325/page712) etc. the sun, clouds, vulcanos, animals have all a bigger effect than travel or heating.
Of course nobody wins a Nobel price for peace (not for science!) with that view but it seems the right one.
By the way - the computer modelling of climate is a big joke - as far as I am aware has nobody solved yet to calculate turbulent systems in physics or maths - otherwise I would like to hear.
I would like to add another more important thought: What is the real reason for this climate change religion? Maybe population growths and the intention of our politicians to extract wealth from the US and Europe to give to rest of the world. In doing so they hope that education and wealth distribution will reduce birth rates as seen in Italy, Germany and other developed nations? A dangerous one sided view probably initiated by the UN.
Open your eyes - there were already times and places on this earth where famine happened (Irland, Russia, China...) When comes the day when this earth can no longer feed it`s people?
For sure much earlier than a human influenced climate change.
That could mean war - for food & clean water!
For me and my small life span of another 30years at best left it`s the end with the climate religion and the start with the right sex education like contraception and the support of social systems(pension, care) designed to help the older people around the world. There is also much more to be done in science and technolgy which should get the funding to counter the population growth threat. This I would like to do on my own terms not like my politicians through a new climate religion, please.
If you have time please look where the population growth is worst and what development/ religion is strong at these places.
it is all about power not about climate
it is all about power not about climate
Whether you believe in global warming or not, companies should control pollution just as a matter or principle. It's called doing the right thing. It's not just carbon we should be controlling, but also sulfur, mercury, lead, and a whole witch's brew of harmful stuff. This will cost us money, but will have a bigger impact on our health than health care reform ever will.
Not surprising. The environuts will do ANYTHING to press their phony cause.
Problem is, a lot of corporations, seeking favor in this new era of political intimidation are signing on to the hoax.
They know that if cap and trade is enacted, they can just charge the cost of carbon credits to their customers (us) and still claim they're doing their part for the environment.
The only ones who will be hurt is the public.
And if the "public" allows this hoax to be perpetrated, they deserve it.
You can tell when an organization like the chamber is losing power - everyone feels free to ridicule it.
I get this terrible feeling that on this Climate Change issue there are both truths and falsehoods emanating from both camps.
It would be really nice if there was some place where the truth was laid out. Where all the biases were extracted and the bare truth exposed.
Would any one know where that truth lies, I would surely like to understand this FULLY for myself.
Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes warming. This would be controversial only for those who haven't studied enough (any?) science or who have some other political ax to grind. Sure there are many other factors and complexities that result in climate change, but we can't bank on an unknown to help us undo the harm from a known.
When will the chamber realize that what's good for this quarter's profits isn't the same as what's best for the majority of people, the planet, or even business cycle.
There is a kind of evil-stupidity among the oddballs who IMAGINE non-natural things besides the Sun, ocean currents, clouds, etc control the weather.
No evidence whatsoever for "cars, cows, or carbonated beverages" making it sunny or rainy, hot or cold, etc. And thankfully less & less are falling for it now. With no increase in global temps for 11 straight years - the opposite of what UN climate models predicted by the way. And with the hottest US year still being 1934 - polls show only 1/3 of Americans are not yet smart enough to not see the Big Scam.
The environmental lobby did this stunt before in the 1970's with exaggerated cold scares. So I think for politicals like Gore and Obama, it's always been about ways for BIG GOV to REDISTRIBUTE wealth & power to enrich themselves, thru a cult-like kind of $green$ national socialism.
BusinessWeek writers peel back the curtain on the economy, business and money matters at the White House, Congress, and federal agencies.
