Amgen CEO got $21 million in 2010 compensation

Amgen Inc. Chairman and CEO Kevin Sharer received compensation valued at about $21 million in 2010, an increase of 38 percent from 2009.

That's according to an Associated Press analysis of data filed with regulators Thursday by the Thousand Oaks, Calif. biotechnology company.

The majority of the executive's pay package came thanks to a hefty boost in stock and option awards valued at about $15 million combined. Sharer also got a performance-based cash bonus of $3.6 million.

The company's profit for 2010 edged up less than 1 percent to $4.63 billion, from $4.61 billion in 2009. Revenue improved 3 percent to $15.05 billion.

The AP's calculation counts salary, bonuses, perks, stock and options awarded to the executive during the year.
