Lt. Gov. John Walsh chosen for Baucus' Senate seat

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana Gov. Steve Bullock says he is appointing Lt. Gov. John Walsh to serve the remainder of U.S. Sen. Max Baucus' term.

The Senate confirmed Baucus as the ambassador to China on Thursday. The Montana Democrat has served in the Senate for 35 years, and he announced last year that he would not seek another term.

The interim appointee will serve until January, when the winner of this year's election takes the seat.

Bullock already had endorsed Walsh in the election, leading to widespread speculation on whether the Democratic governor would give a boost to Walsh's candidacy by appointing him to the interim position.

Walsh has said he asked the governor to appoint him.
