Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $1.88 or 2.5 percent, to $78.47.

Covidien rose $.13 or .2 percent, to $55.78.

Patterson rose $.48 or 1.4 percent, to $34.86.

PerkinElmer fell $.06 or .2 percent, to $31.42.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. fell $.11 or .2 percent, to $61.82.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $.19 or .3 percent, to $70.59.

Waters rose $.64 or .8 percent, to $85.38.
