Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $.72 or .9 percent, to $77.23.

Covidien rose $.78 or 1.4 percent, to $58.45.

Patterson fell $.14 or .4 percent, to $34.45.

PerkinElmer rose $.54 or 1.8 percent, to $30.37.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.72 or 1.2 percent, to $60.15.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $.72 or 1.2 percent, to $58.96.

Waters rose $.87 or 1.1 percent, to $81.47.
