How the major stock indexes fared on Monday
Stocks fell Monday, ending four days of surging prices. Dampening investor spirits was a new sign of a slowdown in U.S. manufacturing and worries over Europe's struggle to keep its currency union intact.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 4.58, or 0.3 percent, to 1,461.19.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 5.28, or 0.2 percent, to 3,178.67.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,335.54 points, or 10.9 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 203.59, or 16.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 573.52, or 22 percent.
