Honeywell Gets Caught Up in Microsoft's.Net

The maker of engineering equipment is building an online service based on Microsoft's .Net technology. Honeywell's aim is to automate the $240 billion-a-year business of maintaining, repairing, and replacing parts at manufacturing plants around the globe. Here's how it will work:

THE PROBLEM
If a pump running a compressor at a chemical plant fails, a plant manager has to call in an expert to fix it. With scads of repair companies, pump makers, and parts suppliers, the task can be daunting.

HONEYWELL'S ANSWER
MyPlant.com helps factory managers shop for goods and services offered by Honeywell and others. With .Net technology, Honeywell will be able to add products from hundreds of suppliers so customers can comparison shop and arrange plant repair and purchasing in one place.

OTHERS PLUG IN
It'll be easy for parts, equipment, and service companies to plug their catalogs and e-commerce systems into Honeywell's and provide customers with instant updates of prices and inventories. With .Net, all the sites interact automatically with one another so the customer feels like it's all one site.

GETTING PAID
Honeywell charges suppliers to list their goods on MyPlant.com. When the .Net technology is in place, Honeywell will take a fee from every transaction run through the service.
