How Juniper Is Beating Cisco For years, Cisco has struck fear into the hearts of other networking companies by trouncing them in their core markets. Now, upstart Juniper is eating into Cisco's core router market. MORE POWERFUL PRODUCTS Juniper produces Internet routers that are four times faster than Cisco's fastest yet require only about two-thirds of the electrical power. WINNING CUSTOMERS During the past six months, Juniper has won business from major accounts such as WorldCom and Cable & Wireless, both of which now use Juniper as the main supplier for routers at the heart of their networks. TAKING SHARE In the second quarter, Juniper grabbed 22% of the market for the most powerful routers, which direct traffic on the Internet. That's up from 17% in the first quarter, according to market researcher Dell'Oro Group. Cisco's slice of the market dropped to 75% in the second quarter, its lowest level in two years. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |
