AOL Is Partnering Everywhere

GATEWAY
AOL will invest $800 million in Gateway over two years to help back an October agreement to develop and co-market Internet appliances and home networking devices, such as Web terminals. Analysts expect the first devices early next year.

PALM
Partnering with 3Com to put the online service's e-mail on Palm handheld devices that store calendars and address books and connect to the Web. The alliance could also produce AOL-branded handheld organizers.

MOTOROLA
AOL's Instant Messenger service, used to track friends and co-workers online and hold one-on-one chats, will be available on Motorola's new smart wireless devices, including the Timeport P1088 smart phone and Timeport P930 two-way pager in early 2000.

DIRECTV
Teamed up with satellite broadcaster to bring AOL to the TV screen. Hughes Network Systems, Philips Electronics, and Network Computer will make set-top boxes--expected early next year--that will combine TV and AOL. AOL also made a $1.5 billion investment in Hughes Electronics to speed the TV plans.
