In 1980, joined Federal Express and developed its breakthrough customer-service and package-tracking systems. Named COO in '83. Next stop: McCaw Cellular, where, in '92, he became president and COO. Three years later, Barksdale became CEO of Netscape Communications. Now an investor, he offers guidance to entrepreneurs.
