Tech WarsEmerging technologies that will change how the telecom industry operates
INTERNET CALLING: You can't beat the quality of a phone call that travels over a conventional phone line. But it's far cheaper for Internet providers to chop up the signal into packets and mail them over the Net--and phone companies will have to get into the act.
CHEAPER HOOKUPS: Phone lines aren't the only routes for phone calls. Increasingly, consumers will have options: satellites, cellular phones, and cable-TV modems. This could be the real ``multimedia'' challenge for phone companies.
DIGITAL CONVERGENCE: It's not enough to deliver voice and data calls. Network operators will have to provide additional services, such as a database that can connect your call to somebody no matter where he or she is. That's one feature of AT&T's planned Renaissance Network.
